SaaS-based digital publishing solutions have broadly two types of delivery method:
- Apps for mobile and desktop operating systems that act as containers for content.
- Page-turning browser-based solutions like YUDU’s own HTML solution called PageTiler.
The companies we work with often ask: “What type of delivery method should we use for the content we’re publishing?” This blog post gives some examples of best practice for organizations and publishers digitally publishing content and can hopefully help you flesh-out your digital strategy more thoroughly.
“I have a lot of content” (i.e. documents, magazine archives etc.) – Apps
For large volumes, we find apps are generally speaking more appropriate. The container app architecture we use allows clients to categorize and sub-categorize content on a small-scale level, so if you have a lot of it this makes more sense from a user experience perspective.
PageTiler also has an “archive view”, but the app structure allows more sophisticated categorisation and navigation, so for the most intuitive user experience with large volumes of content, apps are more ideal.
“I require a high degree of security” – Apps
PageTiler allows you to protect your content such that users must pass a login prompt before they can see any of the pages.
Our native apps go further, and allow you to put a password wall around the entire app. You can also provide a combination of public content and content that is only visible to specific authenticated users. Either way, no protected content is ever present on the user’s device until after they’ve been successfully authenticated

For a single publication such as a short brochure or introductory document, publishing to browser with PageTiler is a good option for an initial trial, since it is both cost-effective and very quick to produce.
Following that trial, you can then evaluate and decide whether or not you’d like to broaden the scope of what it is you’re publishing by considering an app.
“I’m looking to target a userbase that isn’t current engaged with my brand” – PageTiler
PageTiler provides a low barrier to access the content you’re publishing. This makes it ideal for reaching out to presently un-engaged audiences, for example a large catalog mailing list, since they only have to perform one clickthrough to arrive at your publication.
“I want the maximum possible amount of exposure for what it is I’m publishing” – Both
The choice between apps or browser-based editions isn’t mutually exclusive. If you are, a magazine publisher who simply wants the maximum degree of exposure possible, then both delivery methods offer their own unique advantages: PageTiler has the advantage of working on any device the single-link the publication sits on is distributed to, allowing the publisher to distribute it via any channel with the assurance that all they need to do to access the content is click on the link.
