This week, YUDU Media will leave port and plot a course for the PSP Southampton Boat Show 2011. The event will set sail on Friday 16th September so be sure to grab your compass and cruise down. (No more nautical puns I promise)
If you’re attending the event, be sure to pop down to the RYA stand on Saturday at 2pm where there will be a brief talk about the features of their new App and the numerous benefits it will bring. We will also be available for any enquiries you might have as well; just look out for the guys in YUDU white polo shirts, you can’t miss us.
….And as if that isn’t enough; they will also be handing out – wait for it – FREE DONUTS – who can say no to that?!
If you’re just too eager to see the RYA App and can’t wait until Saturday, here’s the link
For all magazine publishers, choosing a title has always been one of the most critical stages in its development. How publishers approach this however varies wildly from title to title. Many publishers understandably go for a title that reflects the content and immediately tells the reader what they can expect in terms of content. However, this blog post isn’t for Wedding Planner magazine or Equestrian Plus because we reckon you’ve already got a pretty good idea of what’s inside. Instead, we’ll highlight some of the more ambiguously monikered titles on YUDU’s Shelves, and hopefully point a few people in the direction of magazines they might not otherwise dip in to.
Undoubtedly the best place to start is with No-TiTLE Magazine. The magazine’s pastille coloured cover art, accompanied by a distinct lack of text other than issue number (30) and price (Free), offer little more indication as to what’s beyond the page. Those readers willing to delve past this enigmatic cover however will find that No-TiTLe is in fact the city of Leeds’ premiere free music magazine. The publication inside is far more what you’d expect from a local music mag, offering features, interviews, reviews and gig guides to anyone with access to a copy. For music lovers interested in learning about a specific music scene or community the latest edition can be viewed below.
Mayhem Magazine is a quarterly UK fashion magazine, but you might not guess it from the title alone. The magazine, celebrating its 1st birthday with its most recent issue, takes an artful look at current fashions, going beyond a typical look at clothing alone. The publication draws in music, home ware, art and even architecture to create a varied, immersive and engaging reading experience. Take a look at its anniversary winter 2011 edition below.
Unlike the two featured publications above, the significance of The Submission’s title becomes clear once inside. The art publication, released every two months, offers a platform for aspiring artists by beautifully presenting paintings, photography and sketches that are submitted to the magazine. Its clean, uncomplicated presentation ensures focus remains on the artwork, whilst giving the impression each page deserves a frame and a place on a wall somewhere. This one is highly recommended.
Beyond these three titles, YUDU.com is brimming with hidden gems waiting to be found by readers. With 1000′s of titles on offer, a bit of a search may uncover the magazine you’ve been looking for!

While a company closing its doors is never a good thing, sometimes good can result from it. Such is the case with former John Menzies Digital Marketing Executive, Chris Sheard, the company behind the recently folded magazinesondemand.co.uk. Chris has landed at YUDU as the Online Subscriptions Marketing Manager where one of his key roles will be to help publications left stranded by the Magazines On Demand’s closure to resurrect their digital presence.
According to the press release, Chris said, “YUDU Media’s digital publishing technology is a world leading solution used by a vast array of publishers and I’m absolutely delighted to be joining such a strong team.” (He said that totally unprompted, we swear
According to Richard Stephenson, CEO of YUDU Media, “Chris brings with him in-depth knowledge and expertise of the UK online magazine market and this will be indispensable to YUDU Media as we move forward. We have ambitious plans for this sector.” Welcome Chris to the team and look forward to great new magazine subscriptions available through YUDU.
With the announcement by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger this month that all textbooks in California will be going to digital format, eBooks have been getting a lot of media attention lately. “It’s nonsensical and expensive to look to traditional hard-bound books when information today is so readily available in electronic form,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “Especially now, when our school districts are strapped for cash and our state budget deficit is forcing further cuts to classrooms, we must do everything we can to untie educators’ hands and free up dollars so that schools can do more with fewer resources.”
YUDU Media’s CEO Richard Stephenson says: “it is not just education providers who save money, but also the students. With a 2005 US Government Accountability Office report putting the average cost of textbooks at $900 per year, it is estimated each student will save $100’s each year by putting text books online.”
While Governor Schwarzenegger is trying to fill a budget hole, eBooks have long been on the mind of educators. In fact, YUDU Media already supplies its award winning eBook platform to Brigham Young University USA, Bronx Community College USA, Texas Tech University USA, London College of Communication, London South Bank University, McGraw-Hill Ryerson School Division, Skoldo, Middlesex University, Lancaster University, London Business School, QS (MBA tour guides), and University of Cumbria & Kumon Education UK. It will also be supplying eBooks to Canadian schools from 2010 onward.
YUDU Media recently published an education eBook entitiled ‘Enhancing Education Through Technology‘ that explains the value of digital publishing beyond just cost savings. Benefits include less impact on the environment, a richer learning experience, and greater interactivity with other online content. To find out more about how YUDU Media can help improve your learning environment, read the eBook on Education or contact us directly. With the multimedia and content rich environment of digital editions, it is time education caught up with technology and YUDU Media is leading the way.
YUDU Media will be showcasing its YUDU Pro product at Publishing Expo from February 11th to the 12th in stand A10. Publishing Expo is the UK’s leading event for the rapidly changing publishing industry, attracts attendees and exhibitors from all aspects of the industry, and will be held at the Olympia 2 in London.
Coming off its recent win as the Digital Magazine Delivery Company of the Year 2008 from the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA), YUDU Media will display its YUDU Pro product, which is built for traditional publishers looking for a customized application to publish their periodicals digitally. The latest features include easy creation of customized loaders and intro pages for self-publishers through a simple upload of a logo or PDF. Also, there are several new features added to viewer including:
Highlighting – there is now persistent storage of highlighted boxes that you create in an edition by simply clicking and dragging a box
Highlight/Notes sidebar – similar to the table of contents thumbnail viewer, this will show a list of all pages containing either highlights or notes along with snippets of the text
Media Browser – clicking a button in the toolbar will change you into a media browser, where you can watch movies, audio, and animations that are within the edition without having the publication in the background. There will be a film strip style interface at the bottom of the screen with the main item loading in the central space on your monitor
Two of the biggest differentiators for publishers, however, come from the integration between YUDU Pro and YUDU.com. Publishers have the option to send their editions to YUDU.com after publication where they have a free newsstand to reach thousands more readers. In addition, by publishing their editions to YUDU.com, they become much more search friendly and publishers can benefit from the groups, subscriptions, and album functionality.
Stop by our stand at Publishing Expo, meet the team, and see some of the new features that we are unveling. Let us show you what all the buzz is about!
