The YUDU Report – May 2011

Going live today, we (the YUDU team) have published the first of our quartly reports investigating how users interact with apps for the iPad and iPhone.

The creatively titled YUDU report takes a look at stats from a cross section of YUDU customers’ Apps, and reports the key findings across 6 chapters.

Amongst other important discoveries, we have found that approxomately 40% of customers using these apps supply opt-in data when given the option to do so. This fact is particularly interesting for magazine publishers interested in venturing into Apple territory, however there is plenty more info in the document including data on edition return rate,  user reading time, monthly app downloads and in-app purchasing.

All in all, this is a document publishers can ill-afford not to get thier hands on. With digital publishing growing at a huge rate, the YUDU report presents the realities of publishing with Apple in one clear, concise and informative document.

Holland's Largest Magazine Printer Partners with YUDU!

Holland’s biggest magazine printer, Senefelder Misset, is now offering YUDU’s custom-branded iPad App solution to its Dutch customers. The brand new service is being sold by Senefelder Misset’s X-Media Solutions division.

Erik Ernens, Commercial Director for Senefelder Misset, said that the decision to work with us was based on all the experience and know-how we have working with the iPad. “We evaluated several options, and felt that YUDU’s custom-branded App approach would best serve the needs of our customers,” said Ernens. “This partnership with YUDU will enable our publishing company clients to quickly and easily get their editions into the App Store and onto the iPad. It also gives them ‘one-stop shopping’ – they can now come to X-Media Solutions for all of their print and digital production needs.”

Shedding further light on the deal, our CEO Richard Stephenson stated, “YUDU has partnered successfully with large printing firms throughout the U.S. and Europe in order to help their clients transition publications to the iPad platform. All they need do is provide us with a print file, and in days we can create a custom App that leaves them in control of their own brand while conforming to Apple’s rules.”

Our Apps act as a container for all new publications from the publisher or company: All YUDU Pro users have to do is upload their master .pdf file to the YUDU platform to easily self-publish directly into the App. Once this is done, App users are notified when new publications are available for in-app purchase or download.

We are really delighted to be given the opportunity to work with such a fantastic company and have our App solution made available to a whole new group of customers!

Apple iPad Trends & Statistics 2

YUDU Media has produced a free whitepaper report which highlights all the key iPad trends and statistics that have emerged since its last iPad report in September 2010.

In just under a year, the iPad has redefined the way we think about personal computing.  Its fresh take on mobile media has left customers desperate to become a part of it all, and competitors scrambling to get in on the tablet revolution. It seems no one can get enough of the iPad.

It’s no wonder then that iPad facts and figures have been coming thick and fast since it hit the market, revealing a number of fascinating key trends. With an ever-updating torrent of information, it’s easy to get swamped by all the statistics and analysis on the device.

So us YUDU Media folk have taken all the important trends and statistics that have emerged since our last report, and compiled them into one free, easy to understand whitepaper report. We’ve also provided some useful updates to the info included in the first report.

iPad/iPhone users can download the document directly from the free YUDU Media App, by selecting “iPad Trends and Statistics 2 report”  once inside the App. For anyone without an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, the document can also be read online by clicking on the link below.

What does mobile technology mean for the future of publishing?

Comment bien partir la journée! by BMeunier.

This week Google unveiled their new smartphone, the Nexus One. It boasts a new version of the Android operating system, and could prove to be the iPhone killer that so many people have been waiting for. Couple this announcement with the rumours that Apple will be announcing their own tablet computer before the months end and quickly it becomes apparent that these are exciting times for mobile technology.

So what could this mean for the publishing world?

Services like YUDU go hand-in-hand with this new technology – it’s easy to imagine how the ability to quickly upload, share and enjoy content would work with on-the-go gadgetry. We’re already seeing a huge boost in mobile publishing thanks to ebook-readers like Amazon’s Kindle. If publishers and authors are quick to realise the potential of this new technology, then there’s huge potential for growth. At the moment mobile publications are pretty limited – only major releases with larger publishers make it to most e-readers.

What’s required is the same freeing-up of content on mobile devices that we’ve already seen on the web. It’s been some time now since aspiring writers required the backing of a major publishing house to let the world see their work. Now publishers must work with tech developers and software engineers to make sure the tools are available for talented people to make their creations available to share and distribute with a minimum of fuss.

It’s a brave new world!

Why Self-Publish?

With the addition of so many tools today to publish your own books, reports, video, and audio content, there is a raging debate about the merits of traditional publishing versus self-publishing. While both have their pros and cons, self-publishing is becoming a more attractive option every day. No cranky publishers to deal with, no arguments over who owns the intellectual property, and no revenue sharing.

Traditional publishers make the argument that there is a sea of mediocre self-published content out there that provides little value; that the traditional publishing process filters through the coal to find you the rare gems. While there is much truth in this, a gem is a gem no matter whether it is self published or not.

One other argument for traditional publishing is that the publisher assumes much of the risk in printing the first edition and responsibility for marketing and distributing the publication once it is published. Again, while also largely true, if you ask any author they will tell you that you can’t rely solely on the publisher’s marketing efforts if you want to sell copies of your book or report.

Many authors are turning to self publishing for a myriad of reasons. Stephen Pope, President of Pope Consulting Inc., advocates self-publishing special reports as a way to provide useful content in smaller bite-size chunks and make more money. There are services such as Lulu.com and CreateSpace from Amazon which will physically print one book at a time at a minimal cost compared to the expensive revenue-sharing models of traditional publishing. Many services will even take your blog and print it as a book, such as SharedBook.com. This is in addition to digital publishing services, such as YUDU.com, that will eliminate printing costs by emulating printed publications online.

The litmus test for whether or not you should self-publish usually comes down to the content and its intended audience. If the content is well written, comprehensive, and the audience is broad, traditional publishing can offer credibility and distribution channels you might not be able to access on your own. If the content is short, the audience is small, and the topic has a small window of relevance, self-publishing may be the best method.

The wonderful thing about publishing today is that the options are almost endless. In order to effectively create, publish, and share your expertise with world, it may require combining multiple methods. For instance, many published authors publish “teaser editions” of their books on YUDU.com with the first chapter or two in order to drive sales of their book. There are many authors who will even publish through traditional channels with their first work and then self-publish subsequent work. The key is to utilize the tools available to you in order to maximize your influence.

Chris Sheard Joins the YUDU Team

While a company closing its doors is never a good thing, sometimes good can result from it. Such is the case with former John Menzies Digital Marketing Executive, Chris Sheard, the company behind the recently folded magazinesondemand.co.uk. Chris has landed at YUDU as the Online Subscriptions Marketing Manager where one of his key roles will be to help publications left stranded by the Magazines On Demand’s closure to resurrect their digital presence.

According to the press release, Chris said, “YUDU Media’s digital publishing technology is a world leading solution used by a vast array of publishers and I’m absolutely delighted to be joining such a strong team.” (He said that totally unprompted, we swear :)

According to Richard Stephenson, CEO of YUDU Media, “Chris brings with him in-depth knowledge and expertise of the UK online magazine market and this will be indispensable to YUDU Media as we move forward. We have ambitious plans for this sector.” Welcome Chris to the team and look forward to great new magazine subscriptions available through YUDU.
