YUDU Study: The Amazon "Kindle" Tablet: A first look

The first signs of what Amazon’s ‘worst kept secret’ tablet device might be like emerged last week, based on the hands-on experience of Tech Crunch’s MG Seigler.  From some not too strenuous deduction work, his write up indicates that this tablet will be one where reading itself takes centre stage.

The Kindle Tablet (already a dead giveaway) will be a seven inch, back-lit colour touch screen device, said to have a similar exterior to the Blackberry Playbook. It runs on Android, but apparently has a unique operating system that unseen on previous devices. It comes with no 3G and no Camera.

So what does this spec tell us? And more importantly, what does it hold in store for the digital book industry?

Firstly, contrary to much of the pre-match billing, the Amazon Tablet does not appear to be going head-to-head with the iPad, or at least not across the board in terms of the features it offers. Instead, as suggested by Seigler, the device may well act as a hub for Amazon content to be effortlessly accessed and consumed. And it is consumption that is the operative word; Amazon’s general store, movies and music are just a tap away, and the device also comes preloaded with the Kindle Reading App.

So rather than going toe to toe with the iPad giant, it seems the closest thing the Amazon tablet will have to a direct competitor is the Barnes and Noble Nook, as reflected by the competitive $250 price tag.

What might see Amazon trump this competitor is their firmly established content platform in the shape of the Kindle store. By walking before they can run in this regard, the customer’s familiarity with the Kindle store process may well see a kindle tablet device as the next logical step.

If this is indeed an Amazon content device, it is impossible to ignore what impact it might have on the content it remains inextricably linked to – books, and in particular digital books.

Until now, Amazon has not had the hardware to provide a faithful representation of all the readable content it sells on the Kindle bookstore. With this device, Kindle has covered the bases it had previously left open. Illustrated books, Children’s books, Magazines and any colour publications will now look and feel as they are supposed to on the devices seven inch colour touchscreen.

For publishers of titles who place real emphasis on aesthetics, initial signs for the Amazon Tablet are indisputably positive. The fact that Amazon – a name synonymous with digital reading – are putting their name to hardware that allows colour, interactive texts to flourish shows a great faith in the growth of reading beyond the capabilities of e-ink.

In a previous blog, we suggested the definition of digital reading is expanding and developing all the time. With this new tablet device, it could well prove that Amazon are looking to embrace this diversity, while also making a play for the lucrative tablet market.

iPad is becoming one of the most popular eBook reading devices

The fifth section of our ‘Trends and Statistics 2′ whitepaper highlights the iPad’s ever growing share of the eBook market.

The evidence in this section displays how the iPad is gaining ground on more established eReader devices such as the Kindle. Research published by ChangeWave found that in November 2010 the iPad had doubled its share of the eReader market since August that same year, whilst in the same period, the Kindle has lost 15 percent of its market share amongst those surveyed.

This analysis is only a fraction of what we have published however, for the full report featuring all the stats, graphs, facts and analysis, read the full ‘Apple iPad: Trends and Statistics 2‘ whitepaper.

Some of life’s great mysteries answered! (By some very insightful 9 year olds)

Have you ever wondered why dogs have tails? Why porcupines have needles? How Cats get their whiskers? or How Sharks got their teeth?

Well wonder no more; pupils at M.W. Savege Elementary have produced a wonderful collection of stories on life’s musings, published on YUDU by their very aptly named publishing center: Whale Tale Publishing. The collection is housed in both their YUDU library, called Homework Dog and their blog.

This collection of 18 adorable stories (I’m told there are more on the way) have been created by the pupils in a third grade class from Minnesota.

After pupils let their imaginations run wild to write and illustrate colourful these stories by hand, stories like, How the Turtle Got Their Shells and How Jellyfish got their Stingers. Teachers at M.W. Savage Elementary decided they wanted to add a technological element to their teaching and uploaded them to YUDU, and we’re glad they did because we love them, and we’re told that the children love being published authors too!

This is a fantastic example of how YUDU can be used in education; this free service has added a new dimension to the children’s work creating some delightful creations. It also allows work to be shared via email to friends and relatives in different cities, states and continents.

Still not sure which one’s of these charming tales is my favourite yet though!!

Education Goes Digital

With the announcement by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger this month that all textbooks in California will be going to digital format, eBooks have been getting a lot of media attention lately. “It’s nonsensical and expensive to look to traditional hard-bound books when information today is so readily available in electronic form,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “Especially now, when our school districts are strapped for cash and our state budget deficit is forcing further cuts to classrooms, we must do everything we can to untie educators’ hands and free up dollars so that schools can do more with fewer resources.”

YUDU Media’s CEO Richard Stephenson says: “it is not just education providers who save money, but also the students. With a 2005 US Government Accountability Office report putting the average cost of textbooks at $900 per year, it is estimated each student will save $100’s each year by putting text books online.”

While Governor Schwarzenegger is trying to fill a budget hole, eBooks have long been on the mind of educators. In fact, YUDU Media already supplies its award winning eBook platform to Brigham Young University USA, Bronx Community College USA, Texas Tech University USA, London College of Communication, London South Bank University, McGraw-Hill Ryerson School Division, Skoldo, Middlesex University, Lancaster University, London Business School, QS (MBA tour guides), and University of Cumbria & Kumon Education UK. It will also be supplying eBooks to Canadian schools from 2010 onward.

YUDU Media recently published an education eBook entitiled ‘Enhancing Education Through Technology‘ that explains the value of digital publishing beyond just cost savings. Benefits include less impact on the environment, a richer learning experience, and greater interactivity with other online content. To find out more about how YUDU Media can help improve your learning environment, read the eBook on Education or contact us directly. With the multimedia and content rich environment of digital editions, it is time education caught up with technology and YUDU Media is leading the way.

Get a Google-Boost With YUDU

Often, whenever you build something new, it can have unintended consequences. One of the pleasant surprises for us here at YUDU is how search-engine friendly a YUDU publication can be.

We purposely built YUDU to avoid some of the common consequences of most digital publications. We make all of the text in a document searchable so you can find just the right content within the edition. Also, YUDU is a .com domain, which helps with search engine placement.

However, the biggest secret to the formula comes down to the community. YUDU has thousands of publications (and about a thousand new ones added every day), all of which are linked to by both publishers and readers of the content. As many know, the secret formula for search engine ranking in Google is quality links. This is how Google determines the quality and relevance of a particular website.

What does this mean for you? By publishing your brochure, eBook, Magazine, whitepaper, pamphlet, or other publication on YUDU, you not only have a cool new way to present your content, but you get a boost in the search engines. Better yet, create a live link back to your own website from your YUDU edition and boost your own “Google juice”. As a top 20,000 website worldwide and as one of the top 5,000 in the UK, you get a quality link to your site and great way to build your search engine placement.

Marketing With eBooks

As marketing becomes more about adding value rather than reach and frequency, eBooks are increasingly becoming an effective way to deliver great content that showcases expertise, provides educational value, and offers a tool for spreading the word virally about you and your business. Seth Godin, the Godfather of word-of-mouth marketing, has always been a big advocate of publishing eBooks to promote his forthcoming printed works. The latest example is the Tribes Casebook, which was written by the online Tribes group he set up on Ning. The Casebook is simply a collection of snippets from the “tribe” in order to promote his new book, Tribes.

There are literally millions of other examples of using eBooks, articles, blogs, or whitepapers to provide valuable content for the purpose of marketing products and services and establishing expertise. However, while the tools may vary the principles remain the same. The concept of “value-added marketing” is simply providing something of value in exchange for a propsect’s time and attention. It is about exchanging value for value, no matter the delivery mechanism. Valuable content will not only capture the attention of your prospects, but will encourage them to pass it along.

That’s where YUDU comes in. In the past, the tools for value added-marketing were often static or lacking in aesthetics. PDFs provided only one-way content and blogs and forums were blatantly lacking in design. YUDU is one of the first to provide a publishing tool that combines the best of both worlds.

Design your content in any tool with which you feel comfortable (from Word to Quark), upload that content to YUDU, and then enhance your content with video, audio, or Flash. You can embed your new multimedia publication in your website or blog or simply provide  a link to the hosted publication on YUDU (such as a link in an e-mail). You can even control the access to your publication through the privacy settings or subscription functionality.

You now have an interactive eBook with everything from turning pages to comments and ratings to notes that can be added right to the page. With YUDU, you can organize and distribute stunning content that can both educate and WOW your prospects.

Marketing is no longer about catchy jingles or creative ads, it is about establishing trust and expertise. YUDU truly gives you the ability to share your expertise with the world.

Your Own Personal "Bailout"

Much has been said of the US government’s bailout of its critical industries, such as banking, insurance, and automotive. Seems that many of these firms need to not only be saved from a faltering economy, but often from themselves. However, in times like these, everyone can use a little extra.

eBay has become one of the great success stories of the Internet. For all of us pack rats, there was finally a place we could list and sell all of our old junk and make money from our “treasures”. This giant garage sale spawned hundreds of small businesses who make a little money on the side by finding great bargains and bringing them to the masses.

Although YUDU is only a few months old, we have seen the same thing start to develop with content publishers. We have found that everyone is an expert something. YUDU now gives you a chance to make some money with your expertise. It is like clearing out the hidden corners of your mind, getting it down in a stunning digital publication, and selling it to the masses. With our YUDU Marketplace, we are looking to create our own mini “rock stars”.

In trying economic times like these, why not become your own personal “bailout”? Finally make some money from that expertise it took you a lifetime to develop? YUDU gives you the tools and the audience.

YUDU Adds Albums, Groups, And Subscriptions

For those of you who have been uploading documents and adding things to your library over the last couple of days, you may have noticed a couple of extras buttons in the navigation. We have responded to several requests by our users and have added 3 new features: albums, groups, and subscriptions. As always, all of our features are still in beta (which is a simpler way of saying please don’t get mad at us while we tweak things to make them better).

Albums allow you to group several different publications, photos, or other files into a single album where it can be sold or viewed as a group. This makes using YUDU much simpler for musicians, photographers, or authors who want to group their work together in packages.

The groups function allows you to set up and moderate your own interest groups to share your passions, knowledge and expertise with other like-minded users. A group can be public, moderated, or private and can have its own library and discussion forum. This feature is ideal for groups that want to get together, share, and discuss topics, reading groups that want to read and discuss a particular eBook every month, or even a place for school or work groups to collaborate on projects.

Finally, the subscriptions feature allows you to create a subscription group to sell access to multiple items – or multiple issues – over time. It’s great for weekly or monthly magazines, newletters, or even a series of eBooks. You can even archive content (such as videos or podcasts) that your subscribers can access and can market additional subscriptions to your group by giving members a free issue or teaser version.

YUDU has always been about sharing your expertise with the world. With these new features, we have given you greater flexibility in grouping and selling your expertise and in finding kindred spirits with which to share it. Please let us know what you think!
