Education Goes Digital

With the announcement by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger this month that all textbooks in California will be going to digital format, eBooks have been getting a lot of media attention lately. “It’s nonsensical and expensive to look to traditional hard-bound books when information today is so readily available in electronic form,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “Especially now, when our school districts are strapped for cash and our state budget deficit is forcing further cuts to classrooms, we must do everything we can to untie educators’ hands and free up dollars so that schools can do more with fewer resources.”

YUDU Media’s CEO Richard Stephenson says: “it is not just education providers who save money, but also the students. With a 2005 US Government Accountability Office report putting the average cost of textbooks at $900 per year, it is estimated each student will save $100’s each year by putting text books online.”

While Governor Schwarzenegger is trying to fill a budget hole, eBooks have long been on the mind of educators. In fact, YUDU Media already supplies its award winning eBook platform to Brigham Young University USA, Bronx Community College USA, Texas Tech University USA, London College of Communication, London South Bank University, McGraw-Hill Ryerson School Division, Skoldo, Middlesex University, Lancaster University, London Business School, QS (MBA tour guides), and University of Cumbria & Kumon Education UK. It will also be supplying eBooks to Canadian schools from 2010 onward.

YUDU Media recently published an education eBook entitiled ‘Enhancing Education Through Technology‘ that explains the value of digital publishing beyond just cost savings. Benefits include less impact on the environment, a richer learning experience, and greater interactivity with other online content. To find out more about how YUDU Media can help improve your learning environment, read the eBook on Education or contact us directly. With the multimedia and content rich environment of digital editions, it is time education caught up with technology and YUDU Media is leading the way.

Which Digital Publisher is Right for You?

We often receive feedback about how many digital publishing tools are out there and how hard it is to choose among them. Whether you are publishing an eBook, a digital version of your corporate brochure, or a presentation you gave at an industry conference, it is difficult to wade through the sea of providers to determine which one is the best for you and your needs. What makes this even harder is that it seems that more are popping up every day. While we obviously have a strong bias (all the indicators say that YUDU is the greatest invention since the wheel), we wanted to give you a little more insight into our industry and what sets one apart from another.

Let start with the business model. With the recent demise of one of the popular digital magazine sites, MagazinesOnDemand (www.magazinesondemand.co.uk), people are starting to wonder whether the model is sustainable in the long term. Some of the bigger consumer-publishing sites out there like Scribd, Issuu, and SlideShare are largely driven by advertising while the virtual newsstands, such as Zinio and MagazinesOnDemand are largely driven by subscriptions to content. In the end, it was MagazinesOnDemand’s investors that pulled the plug on the site because they didn’t feel they were receiving a quick enough return on investment. The same could be said of the consumer-publishers, many of which are largely venture funded and still hemorrhaging money.

YUDU is a unique mix of consumer and professional digital publishing and digital newsstand. Most of the competitors are technology companies who decided to get into digital publishing. YUDU got its start in doing advanced digital conversions for major organizations and gathered its staff from the publishing industry itself. We decided to share a subset of our digital conversion tool with others to give everyone the ability to share their expertise with the world through self-publishing and social networking. Therefore, our revenue comes from multiple sources including conversions for major publications through YUDU Pro, feature upgrades through YUDU Plus, subscriptions, transaction fees, and, in the future, targeted ad sharing.

In fact, YUDU will be making a bit more of a separation between the professional newsstand and the self-publishing community in upcoming releases through improved subscription features. Stay tuned for further announcements on these features.

The second big differentiator comes down to unique features. While any of the consumer publishing tools out there offer a base level of service, such as the conversion, a viewer, ability to create profiles, the ability to embed a publication, and more, there are some distinct differences. YUDU offers 3 unique features: the ability for users to add multimedia to a digital publication, the ability to sell publications worldwide (including subscriptions), and the ability to distribute many different forms of digital content such as print, audio, photography, and video. This means you can distribute everything from a magazine to an audio book series to a photography album on YUDU using the same library and tool set. Some of the competitors are even attempting mimic some of these features, but are still not quite there (i.e. allowing you to sell publications, but only in the US).

When it comes to professional digital publishing, YUDU Pro also offers unique features that set it apart from the competition. Our viewer doesn’t require a proprietary download, but runs in a browser using Flash. We can also custom design features depending on the client’s needs. However, one of the biggest differentiators YUDU Pro offers is access to millions of potential customers through our digital newsstand. It is the connection between consumer and professional publishing that offers significant value to our publishing clients.

While YUDU may not be the 800 lb gorilla in the space, you could definitely say we gravitate towards a richer experience and a more professional user base – like the wise and nimble dolphin (as long as we’re on animal analogies). We have always been, and always will be, dedicated to the cause of giving experts a voice. We want to give everyone the chance to share their expertise with the world, and, hopefully, make themselves a little money in the process. In the meantime, we also continue our efforts to introduce traditional publishers to the power of digital content. It is that combination between traditional publications and crowd sourced content that provide the secret sauce behind YUDU’s success. We’d love for you to be a part of it.

The Future of Digital Books?

There has been a lot of talk lately about the future of the publishing industry and the surge of digital publishing alternatives. The latest come from an article in the New York Times, which mentions upstarts Vook, WEBook, and Wattpad as new alternatives for authors looking to bypass the traditional publishing channels in order to control their own distribution. As adoption of digital editions increases, new tools continue to become available to publish and read the “digital word”.

YUDU had its start in the publishing industry almost a decade ago and has seen an evolution occur before its eyes. While printed books or magazines may never be completely replaced, digital editions offer rich interactivity unlike any other. The development team at YUDU has built a multimedia platform from the ground up in order to combine print, audio, and video for a complete sensory experience.

According to the New York Times Article, Sara Nelson, the former editor of Publishers Weekly and a publishing industry consultant, said “If you are going to put video in a book, it has to flow so naturally into the story that readers don’t even realize they are switching mediums.” As digital editions evolve, they will continue to improve the reading experience by making multimedia seamless.

While YUDU offers a rich interactive publishing platform, it will continue to evolve and add features that simplify the interface, improve the experience, and increase access.  Currently, YUDU is the only platform to offer both multimedia publications as well as a marketplace to sell them, however, as other technologies catch up it becomes even more important to find easy access to a source for great content. As the experience continues to improve, so will the adoption. Now is the time to experience digital books for yourself. Start with the YUDU library and tell us what you think.

How do you see yourself using digital books?

Your Own Personal "Bailout"

Much has been said of the US government’s bailout of its critical industries, such as banking, insurance, and automotive. Seems that many of these firms need to not only be saved from a faltering economy, but often from themselves. However, in times like these, everyone can use a little extra.

eBay has become one of the great success stories of the Internet. For all of us pack rats, there was finally a place we could list and sell all of our old junk and make money from our “treasures”. This giant garage sale spawned hundreds of small businesses who make a little money on the side by finding great bargains and bringing them to the masses.

Although YUDU is only a few months old, we have seen the same thing start to develop with content publishers. We have found that everyone is an expert something. YUDU now gives you a chance to make some money with your expertise. It is like clearing out the hidden corners of your mind, getting it down in a stunning digital publication, and selling it to the masses. With our YUDU Marketplace, we are looking to create our own mini “rock stars”.

In trying economic times like these, why not become your own personal “bailout”? Finally make some money from that expertise it took you a lifetime to develop? YUDU gives you the tools and the audience.

YUDU Adds Albums, Groups, And Subscriptions

For those of you who have been uploading documents and adding things to your library over the last couple of days, you may have noticed a couple of extras buttons in the navigation. We have responded to several requests by our users and have added 3 new features: albums, groups, and subscriptions. As always, all of our features are still in beta (which is a simpler way of saying please don’t get mad at us while we tweak things to make them better).

Albums allow you to group several different publications, photos, or other files into a single album where it can be sold or viewed as a group. This makes using YUDU much simpler for musicians, photographers, or authors who want to group their work together in packages.

The groups function allows you to set up and moderate your own interest groups to share your passions, knowledge and expertise with other like-minded users. A group can be public, moderated, or private and can have its own library and discussion forum. This feature is ideal for groups that want to get together, share, and discuss topics, reading groups that want to read and discuss a particular eBook every month, or even a place for school or work groups to collaborate on projects.

Finally, the subscriptions feature allows you to create a subscription group to sell access to multiple items – or multiple issues – over time. It’s great for weekly or monthly magazines, newletters, or even a series of eBooks. You can even archive content (such as videos or podcasts) that your subscribers can access and can market additional subscriptions to your group by giving members a free issue or teaser version.

YUDU has always been about sharing your expertise with the world. With these new features, we have given you greater flexibility in grouping and selling your expertise and in finding kindred spirits with which to share it. Please let us know what you think!

Using eBooks For Viral Marketing

We are always impressed here at YUDU by those who are smart enough to take new technologies and make them work in new and exciting ways. We stumble across several experts who use eBooks to create viral campaigns, drive search traffic, and build their personal brand.

One such expert is eBook guru Harvey Segal who wrote a column that was recently posted at the Owndotcomfree’s Weblog titled, “How To Produce PERFECT Viral E-Books”. In his post, he talks about how to use affiliates to drive traffic and quickly spread your content. He advocates allowing your affiliates to “rebrand” the product links in your eBook in order to make the commissions on the sale of products. You can benefit by having a sign up form in your eBook to collect subscribers, make the links to products you sell or have the rights to resell, or collect second tier affiliate commissions. Harvey provides an excellent incentive program to drive an eBook to go viral. One thing we would add is that with YUDU, you can easily sell your eBook and have affiliates promote the eBook and make commissions. You can also create live links within a YUDU publication that can be altered after the document is published.

One other great post we liked at Owndotcomfree is titled, “Getting More Traffic to Your Website Using Viral E-Books“. In this post, it talks about bundling your articles or blog posts together to create an eBook and then giving it away as a thank you gift or incentive. Again great tips for using content to drive awareness, traffic, and sales.
