Knowing Your Audience is Key

The recent announcement that Microsoft have bought a 17.6% share in the Barnes and Noble NOOK business is likely to be taken with a pinch of salt by the world of publishing. However, this move is significant and is likely to have a few key implications for publishers.

The first is the required technical support for a likely introduction of Windows mobile 8 as another operating system to support (in addition to iOS and Android), especially for those that have invested in Apps to date.

The second is that NOOK is now not just the innovation of a book retailer but it now has a potent technology backer in Microsoft. The future of reading and e-books appears to be in the hands of four large tech companies: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google. The culture of these companies is very different to company cultures we find within publishing companies or booksellers for that matter. Constant and aggressive innovation is needed to be successful both in software and hardware development.

The age-old relationships that have been established over many years of publishing and book-selling are becoming less relevant in a world where digital self-publishing has become so accessible. The strategy of the most important player of them all, Amazon, is unambiguous and make it clear that they have have no interest in protecting the way publishing works today.

The company that provides many publishers with their biggest paychecks is also their biggest threat, and if Jeff Bezos’ comments are anything to go by, this year will see Amazon further establish itself as a place for authors to go to get their works published.

However, I have always thought in general that book publishers add enormous value to their writers, readers and society on the whole. They are expert curators of content, and know better than anyone, what makes a good story. Publishing is also an incredibly diverse industry with plenty of niches where expert knowledge is key to success and these publishers do not need to be intimidated in this new age of dominant technology companies.

Now is the time to know your audience and readers more than ever, as ultimately they are the people who choose what they want to read, how and where they want to read it. E-books are already incredibly accessible, and the barriers to purchasing have been lowered, which is why e-books now account for a significant size of a publisher’s turnover.

However, the sooner publishers take greater ownership over their readers and customers, the more the power of the publishing world will balance the might of Amazon.  Those relationships will be profitable. Container apps build reading communities and they are a great way to publish on mobile devices in interesting and dynamic ways whilst maintaining and understanding your readership better. This does not have to be a substitute for a standard e-book programme that ensures books are on the main aggregator stores but a   parallel strategy that develops the publisher to reader relationship.

YUDU iPad Catalogues See 50% Rise in Basket Size

We’ve just released stats for the iPad eCatalogues we produce for a number of the world’s leading retailers.  At the time of writing our apps account for 25% of the US top 20 iPad digital catalogues in the app category on the App store, as well as a number for leading UK retailers so we feel the stats are indicative of a wider digital trend for the iPad.

Perhaps the most startling stat we’ve uncovered is that basket sizes for iPad eCatalogues are typically 50% higher compared to a retailer’s standard website shopping cart.  This is a remarkable figure and we think it’s due to the iPad being a far friendlier and usable consumer device.

People tend to relax and have ‘downtime’ with the iPad, with viewing figures peaking later in the evening and at weekends.  This relaxed setting allows people to really engage with eCatalogues in a way that they don’t with PC’s and laptops.

Two other notable stats are that the average online iPad catalogue experiences 2,500 individual customer views per week and, just as significantly, 35% of all visitors are voluntarily choosing to register their personal details for future marketing purposes.

Overall, the stats are hugely encouraging and with 65 million iPads set to be sold in 2012, the future for iPad eCatalogues is huge.  Below you can view our CEO, Richard Stephenson, talk about YUDU’s iPad catalogue apps.

YUDU app downloads jump by 94% post Christmas

It happens every year when all those shiny new iPads get unwrapped. This year in the week following Christmas downloads of Apps created using the YUDU platform increased by over 94% and it looks like this is holding steady.

Industry estimates suggest at least 4.2 million new iOS devices activated on Dec 25th alone. The combined Android and iOS activation numbers represent a 353% increase on Christmas 2010. We’ll know more when Apple reveal in January exact numbers for how many iPads have been sold, but there’s no doubt that the mobile audience is expanding at a phenomenal rate.

Looking at our own stats, downloads of the shopping catalogue apps such as Land’s End, Littlewoods and Very seem particularly strong. High up the list is Virgin Holidays which suggests it is time for planning the holiday and getting some decent weather. Sounds like a good idea….

The Apple iPad Trends & Statistics 3

Nine months since YUDU Media presented Trends and Statistics 2 we’re back with our latest report: Trends & Statistics 3.

In this third trends and statistics document, we will look at Apple’s current and projected position in the market and display that although Apple is set to face increasingly stiff competition; all signs suggest that the device will continue its tablet dominance for the foreseeable future.

Although the tablet landscape has changed dramatically throughout 2011, the iPad and the iPad 2 remain the benchmark by which all other tablet devices are judged, and if the quarter has proven anything, no device is yet to meet the lofty standards set by Apple’s devices.

Both the current and projected sales figures have proven that the iPad is still king in the tablet market, and will remain the key player in an industry that is set for unprecedented overall year-on-year growth up until at least 2015.

But the newest threat to the iPod’s tablet dominance is perhaps the largest. Amazon’s Kindle Fire looks set to be able to offer a unified service that rivals the iPad’s own. Its established presence as a content-delivery channel has resulted in 95,000 devices being pre-ordered on day one.  2012 therefore looks set to see the continuation and escalation of the battle for tablet device supremacy.

While this may be slightly troubling news for Apple, the larger pool of tablet devices can only be considered as a positive for digital magazine publishers.

As we reported in a recent blog post, the Kindle Fire will be geared towards media consumption, and in particular, interactive colour reading experiences. It is truly exciting and encouraging for Amazon to put their name to hardware that allows for this kind of reading.

Perhaps what it emphasises more than anything however is the enduring potential of the industry, and how important digital reading experiences will be in this overall growth. If Amazon’s faith is well placed, 2012 looks set to be a huge year for tablet magazine publishers and the devices they are viewed upon.

iPad/iPhone users can download the document directly from the free YUDU Media App, by selecting “iPad Trends and Statistics 3″  once inside the App. For anyone without an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone, the document can also be read online by clicking here. We’re also made a nice little infographic to help you visualize the information.

Digital Magazine Awards 2011

Entry to the competition can be competed through this very link, where the applicant can choose from a plethora of categories to enter.

YUDU created editions have had previous success at this ceremony, with both DJ Magazine and Better Photography being awarded a bronze award.

For the positive publicity and general seal of approval this award can bring, we’d say its definitely worth a punt. So for any interested parties be sure to get your entries in sharpish, as there remains only next 19 hours 25minutes and 32 seconds to submit your entrance forms.

Apple launch Newsstand as part of iOS 5

Apple yesterday launched its much anticipated iOS 5 service for its customers. Amongst the 200 new features the update offers, the most significant to publishers will no doubt be the release of the Apple Newsstand.

We’ve already had a few questions from our users asking how to get the Newsstand up and running, so in this blog post we’ll provide a quick run-through of how you can access the tool (its pretty easy, don’t worry..).

1) The Newsstand is available to owners of the iPhone, iPod touch iPad or iPad 2, so firstly plug your device into a computer operating iTunes version 10.5. If you do not have this version an automatic prompt should pop up allowing you to download it, but if not go to the iTunes store and click ‘check available downloads‘ to get the latest version.

2) Once plugged in, click Update on the Summary screen for the device and an automatic prompt for iOS 5 will appear. Once downloaded, a Newsstand App will be automatically loaded onto your device.

Remember, You can’t upgrade unless you have at least iTunes 10.5, so make sure you have updated the software before you begin the whole process.

Happy Reading!
