Kate Hudson in Multimedia

Every once in a while, a publication comes along that we just have to highlight. A Distinctive Style Magazine always produces stunning publications. However, it’s fall 2009 edition integrates many of YUDU’s powerful features into a rich multimedia experience. Of course, it always helps when you have someone like Kate Hudson grace the cover.

Hudson is featured in the magazine promoting her affiliation with a new cause-related line of hair care products. WildAid is an all-natural line of hair care products that is not only free of any animal by-products or animal testing, but donates a percentage of it sales to aid the saving of endangered animals across the globe. The very front page of the magazine combines a photo with Hudson along with a leopard and a video explaining her involvement. The rest of the publication combines video commercials with print ads, actively linked ads and resources, and beautiful layout and design.

A Distinctive Style does a wonderful job of combining much of what YUDU has to offer. What can you do with YUDU?

Why Self-Publish?

With the addition of so many tools today to publish your own books, reports, video, and audio content, there is a raging debate about the merits of traditional publishing versus self-publishing. While both have their pros and cons, self-publishing is becoming a more attractive option every day. No cranky publishers to deal with, no arguments over who owns the intellectual property, and no revenue sharing.

Traditional publishers make the argument that there is a sea of mediocre self-published content out there that provides little value; that the traditional publishing process filters through the coal to find you the rare gems. While there is much truth in this, a gem is a gem no matter whether it is self published or not.

One other argument for traditional publishing is that the publisher assumes much of the risk in printing the first edition and responsibility for marketing and distributing the publication once it is published. Again, while also largely true, if you ask any author they will tell you that you can’t rely solely on the publisher’s marketing efforts if you want to sell copies of your book or report.

Many authors are turning to self publishing for a myriad of reasons. Stephen Pope, President of Pope Consulting Inc., advocates self-publishing special reports as a way to provide useful content in smaller bite-size chunks and make more money. There are services such as Lulu.com and CreateSpace from Amazon which will physically print one book at a time at a minimal cost compared to the expensive revenue-sharing models of traditional publishing. Many services will even take your blog and print it as a book, such as SharedBook.com. This is in addition to digital publishing services, such as YUDU.com, that will eliminate printing costs by emulating printed publications online.

The litmus test for whether or not you should self-publish usually comes down to the content and its intended audience. If the content is well written, comprehensive, and the audience is broad, traditional publishing can offer credibility and distribution channels you might not be able to access on your own. If the content is short, the audience is small, and the topic has a small window of relevance, self-publishing may be the best method.

The wonderful thing about publishing today is that the options are almost endless. In order to effectively create, publish, and share your expertise with world, it may require combining multiple methods. For instance, many published authors publish “teaser editions” of their books on YUDU.com with the first chapter or two in order to drive sales of their book. There are many authors who will even publish through traditional channels with their first work and then self-publish subsequent work. The key is to utilize the tools available to you in order to maximize your influence.

The University Catalog Goes Digital

We have mentioned the value of YUDU to the education sector in a previous post. The National University of Ireland in Maynooth has taken it even a step further. They have decided to move their entire Undergraduate Course Catalog online. They have even embedded it on their website. Now a student can browse the catalog, review potential classes, and access information about the school without having to order a catalog.

In future editions, the school could go as far as embedding video of the campus, interviews with students and staff, or links to other sites and resources. All of this is possible, and more. How can you use YUDU to simplify or promote your organizations?

Obama Administration Going Digital?

According to a recent USA Today article, the Obama Administration is considering a cost cutting proposal that includes saving almost USD $48,000 by “consolidating subscriptions to professional publications and newspapers, and, where possible, encouraging the use of free online publications rather than purchase the print version.” There are a total of 77 cost cutting measures totaling over $243 million.

This is a telling sign for printed publication looking toward the uncertain future. In order to compete effectively in the 21st century, print publications need to offer digital options that can help cut their own costs and save customers money. If it is important enough for the US government, it should be important enough to you.

YUDU can provide an easy, and free option for taking your publication digital. For a small upgrade fee, there are many additional features that can add wow to your publication. Even Obama’s own Blueprint for Change can be enhanced using the new YouTube video integration. Click here to find out more.
