Random Finds – 30/6/2009

We thought we would start a new feature on the blog. As we browse through YUDU.com, we often find interesting publications that are worth sharing with everyone. Here on the blog, we can go into a bit more detail than if we shared them on Twitter. They don’t always go together and some are more bizarre than others, however, all are worth a look if you are interested in great content. We do guarantee one thing: they will all be a bit…random.

Do you enjoy random art? Have we got a publication for you. Altered Bits Art Zine publishes a quarterly edition of mixed media art, with the latest theme being “Odd Numbers” (incidentially, April’s edition “Anatomically Altered” is also quite entertaining). This publication was brought to our attention by one of our Twitter followers, @aprintaday.

Here’s another @aprintaday favorite, Moloko Plus. If you are into more contemporary art (illustrations, design, and photography), you’ll really enjoy this publication. Text is in Russian, but the artwork is universal.

Are you a graphic designer? Grafik Magazine may suit your tastes as well. Whether you’re in search for some inspiration or just want to see some interesting lay outs, it is a good read. Also check out their Facebook page.

The last one we’ll share is The Pictures and Diary of a Wartime Artist. You get an amzing picture of World War I through the eyes of Len Smith. His diary, sketches, and watercolors are remarkably preserved and give you insight into what it was like to serve in WWI from the day he enlisted until the day the war ended.

Chris Sheard Joins the YUDU Team

While a company closing its doors is never a good thing, sometimes good can result from it. Such is the case with former John Menzies Digital Marketing Executive, Chris Sheard, the company behind the recently folded magazinesondemand.co.uk. Chris has landed at YUDU as the Online Subscriptions Marketing Manager where one of his key roles will be to help publications left stranded by the Magazines On Demand’s closure to resurrect their digital presence.

According to the press release, Chris said, “YUDU Media’s digital publishing technology is a world leading solution used by a vast array of publishers and I’m absolutely delighted to be joining such a strong team.” (He said that totally unprompted, we swear :)

According to Richard Stephenson, CEO of YUDU Media, “Chris brings with him in-depth knowledge and expertise of the UK online magazine market and this will be indispensable to YUDU Media as we move forward. We have ambitious plans for this sector.” Welcome Chris to the team and look forward to great new magazine subscriptions available through YUDU.

Education Goes Digital

With the announcement by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger this month that all textbooks in California will be going to digital format, eBooks have been getting a lot of media attention lately. “It’s nonsensical and expensive to look to traditional hard-bound books when information today is so readily available in electronic form,” Schwarzenegger wrote. “Especially now, when our school districts are strapped for cash and our state budget deficit is forcing further cuts to classrooms, we must do everything we can to untie educators’ hands and free up dollars so that schools can do more with fewer resources.”

YUDU Media’s CEO Richard Stephenson says: “it is not just education providers who save money, but also the students. With a 2005 US Government Accountability Office report putting the average cost of textbooks at $900 per year, it is estimated each student will save $100’s each year by putting text books online.”

While Governor Schwarzenegger is trying to fill a budget hole, eBooks have long been on the mind of educators. Technology For Teachers

What happens when a high school social studies teacher from western Maine decides to share his fanaticism for the use of technology in the classroom? FreeTech4Teachers.com is what happens.

Richard Byrne is, by all accounts, a technology nut. He has seen the power of so many free tools available online and how they can improve the in-classroom experience. He writes a blog at http://www.freetech4teachers.com where he highlights one particular technology in each post and how it helps teachers in their efforts.

Recently, Richard also created a publication and posted it on YUDU called “12 Essentials for Technology Integration.” In this free guide, Richard highlights 12 technology tools “that can be used in most classroom settings regardless of content area.” Categories include Document and Presentation Creation Tools, Tools for Communicating with Parents and Students, Tools for Creating Collaborative Student Projects, and Educational Alternatives to YouTube.

Are You Indie?

Boise, Idaho based advertising agency, Drake Cooper, recently published, “The Independent Guide to Being Independent in a Not-So-Independent World” on YUDU. This creatively designed agency portfolio highlights not only the agency’s award-winning work, but discusses the power of an idea, what it takes to truly be independent, and how limitations ignite creativity.

With quotes like, “Uniformed opinions are the fanny pack of the digital age” and “Limitations force change and change is the gasoline of the creative bon fire,” you can’t help but be both entertained and intrigued. One of the most compelling quotes from the Drake Cooper Indie book, however, has to be, “Every now and then, industry pundits claim it’s the end of print, the death of the 30-second TV spot, and the demise of advertising as we know it. Actually, these things don’t die. They reincarnate.” We couldn’t agree more.

Which Digital Publisher is Right for You?

We often receive feedback about how many digital publishing tools are out there and how hard it is to choose among them. Whether you are publishing an eBook, a digital version of your corporate brochure, or a presentation you gave at an industry conference, it is difficult to wade through the sea of providers to determine which one is the best for you and your needs. What makes this even harder is that it seems that more are popping up every day. While we obviously have a strong bias (all the indicators say that YUDU is the greatest invention since the wheel), we wanted to give you a little more insight into our industry and what sets one apart from another.

Let start with the business model. With the recent demise of one of the popular digital magazine sites, MagazinesOnDemand (www.magazinesondemand.co.uk), people are starting to wonder whether the model is sustainable in the long term. Some of the bigger consumer-publishing sites out there like Scribd, Issuu, and SlideShare are largely driven by advertising while the virtual newsstands, such as Zinio and MagazinesOnDemand are largely driven by subscriptions to content. In the end, it was MagazinesOnDemand’s investors that pulled the plug on the site because they didn’t feel they were receiving a quick enough return on investment. The same could be said of the consumer-publishers, many of which are largely venture funded and still hemorrhaging money.

YUDU is a unique mix of consumer and professional digital publishing and digital newsstand. Most of the competitors are technology companies who decided to get into digital publishing. YUDU got its start in doing advanced digital conversions for major organizations and gathered its staff from the publishing industry itself. We decided to share a subset of our digital conversion tool with others to give everyone the ability to share their expertise with the world through self-publishing and social networking. Therefore, our revenue comes from multiple sources including conversions for major publications through YUDU Pro, feature upgrades through YUDU Plus, subscriptions, transaction fees, and, in the future, targeted ad sharing.

In fact, YUDU will be making a bit more of a separation between the professional newsstand and the self-publishing community in upcoming releases through improved subscription features. Stay tuned for further announcements on these features.

The second big differentiator comes down to unique features. While any of the consumer publishing tools out there offer a base level of service, such as the conversion, a viewer, ability to create profiles, the ability to embed a publication, and more, there are some distinct differences. YUDU offers 3 unique features: the ability for users to add multimedia to a digital publication, the ability to sell publications worldwide (including subscriptions), and the ability to distribute many different forms of digital content such as print, audio, photography, and video. This means you can distribute everything from a magazine to an audio book series to a photography album on YUDU using the same library and tool set. Some of the competitors are even attempting mimic some of these features, but are still not quite there (i.e. allowing you to sell publications, but only in the US).

When it comes to professional digital publishing, YUDU Pro also offers unique features that set it apart from the competition. Our viewer doesn’t require a proprietary download, but runs in a browser using Flash. We can also custom design features depending on the client’s needs. However, one of the biggest differentiators YUDU Pro offers is access to millions of potential customers through our digital newsstand. It is the connection between consumer and professional publishing that offers significant value to our publishing clients.

While YUDU may not be the 800 lb gorilla in the space, you could definitely say we gravitate towards a richer experience and a more professional user base – like the wise and nimble dolphin (as long as we’re on animal analogies). We have always been, and always will be, dedicated to the cause of giving experts a voice. We want to give everyone the chance to share their expertise with the world, and, hopefully, make themselves a little money in the process. In the meantime, we also continue our efforts to introduce traditional publishers to the power of digital content. It is that combination between traditional publications and crowd sourced content that provide the secret sauce behind YUDU’s success. We’d love for you to be a part of it.
