The Evolution of the Wildlife Magazine

National Geographic garners a lot of attention for its stunning wildlife photography, and why shouldn’t it? It’s been encouraging people to care about our planet for over 120 years. In fact, the surge in popularity of films such as March of the Penguins, the Planet Earth Television Series, or Disney’s Earth movie show that there is a growing awareness of not only the beauty of our planet, but of efforts to help maintain that beauty.

The breathtaking imagery is combined with insightful commentary to tell a compelling story.

However, one of the coolest features about the digital format is that with the YUDU platform, Scanout is able to highlight the gear that is used in each picture and link it back to the websites where you can purchase each item. Whether these are paid advertisements or not, a reader can see a piece of equipment in action and instantly go to the place online where they can buy it. Scanout even offers a gear page called “Scanout.com Backstage” where they highlight “the gear and the people that made this project a success”. Again, they link every picture to its associated website.

Not only does this offer a novel way to showcase a photographer’s work, but a novel way for providing value to advertisers and sponsors. With the addition of video, Scanout Magazine could even offer a full interactive experience.

With so much beauty in the world, YUDU.com now offers a way that those who capture it on film can share it with the world.

Man Cannot Live on Print Alone

Much has been said about the tools available today, such as YUDU.com, to convert your printed publications into native format digital publications. YUDU has become a haven for small niche publications, such as Eagle Magazine from Eagle, Idaho; Colorado Homeowner Magazine from Ft. Collins, CO; and George Hirsch Lifestyle eMagazine from Southampton, NY. While YUDU is unique in the fact that is allows you to add multimedia to your printed publication and it allows you to sell your publications, there are several services out there that offer your basic conversion print to digital.

5 Steps to Higher Search Engine Ranking

Perhaps you have noticed that while searching for certain terms in Google or some other search engine, documents published on YUDU rank high in relevance – often on the first page. As we mentioned back in January, YUDU is a powerful tool for giving you a boost in search engine placement, something many companies pay thousands of dollars a month to SEO firms to accomplish for them. There are several reasons why, so in an effort to give you more detail about how you can use YUDU for your search engine marketing, we have identified 5 steps that will increase your “findability” online and boost traffic to your website. Obviously, results will vary based on popularity of search term and the amount of relevant content, however, here are YUDU’s 5 Steps to Higher Search Engine Ranking:

Step 1 – Publish on YUDU

Animated Flip Book Icon

In the past, YUDU offered 2 ways to promote your publication: placing a static icon of your front page with a link back to the publication or embedding the publication in a special viewer on your web page or blog. Now we have added another impressive promotion tool.

There is a new option under the Preview/Publish menu called Flipbook. Each time you publish, YUDU will automatically generate a mini page-turning Flash icon that you can add to your website or blog. When a preview has been published, you will also see an animated preview of 8 pages of your publication. You simply copy and paste the code (at the bottom of the preview/publish page) needed to embed this icon on your webpage. You can even alter the size of the icon. This animated publication will draw people’s attention and links to your full publication.

Media Browser

Looking for an even richer reading experience? With the new media display menu, a reader can view and browse images, audio, video and Flash right from within the publication. You have the option to include the new button on the reader toolbar, which opens up a menu that makes accessing the multimedia files inside or outside the publication so much easier. When you publish your edition, go to ‘media browser settings’ and simply tick the checkbox next to the items that you wish to be included. You can even upload new files, that are not within your publication.

Reader Highlights

And finally, you can now allow your readers to add yellow highlights to areas or articles of interest within your publication just as they might with a physical edition. You will now notice a highlight button on the reader toolbar. This works in the same way as the Notes feature. You simply click the button on the toolbar to add highlights to the page. When you have finished adding highlights, you click the highlight button again to continue. You can delete or add additional highlights and they are stored on the individual users computer so they are customized to you. You can even view all of your Notes and Highlights with a single click.
